Development trend of High-speed drilling EDM
EDM drilling machines have existed for 30 years from the birth of the first edm drilling to now.There has been a great technological advance that from the Z axis NC to three axis NC,and drilling through the smallest hole’s diameter from 0.3mm to 0.15 mm.But the market of edm drilling is very chaotic,Many manufactures in this industry sell at low price in order to seize the market,and try to reduce the cost of edm drilling to ensure profits.As a result,the price are getting lower and the quality is getting worse.The function of high-speed drilling edm is single,the structure is simple,but is widely used in processing market,So many inexperienced manufactures went to produce the edm drilling machines,resulting in over capacity and low quality.

1. The traditional small hole drilling edm adopts the micro-computer to control Z axis up and down move,the X,Y axis worktable is moved manually according to the digital display 5 um.This method of process is suit able for the few holes machining and low pitch accuracy.While need to process plenty of small hole on the piece,that machine dose not adapt to the requirement.Fao example,Compare with Z axis NC edm drilling,the three axis NC drilling machines can save 50 percent of the time to process 40 small holes diameter is 0.5mm on the same work-piece.Operators just fix the work-piece on the working table,the drilling edm can read the graphic that suffix is DXF or DWG from Auto-CAD, and program automatically,then the processing is finished rapidly.
2. Drilling the high temperature resistance materials is a difficult question for small hole edm drilling machine,Tungsten steel,nickel alloy, and cobalt carbide are all resistant to high temperature.The key to efficient processing the heat-resisting material is the output energy of pulse power supply.The output energy to drill the work-piece is only 35 percent of the traditional pulse power supply of EDM drilling machine,therefore,the drilling speed is very slow.A new type none-resistance pulse power has been applied to the high-speed small hole drilling machine now,that output energy reaches 65%. and the working efficiency will be improved 50 percent to drill the heat-resisting materials.
3. EDM driller general can process the holes range of 0.3-3.0 mm;However,holes less than 0.3 mm cannot be machined by the traditional edm driller.More customers in the market need the stronger function edm drilling machine than before,Chinese Chikai developed and produced a new type of electric spark drilling machine that can process the smallest holes of 0.15 mm in 2017. The other side,punching higher thickness metal is a new requirement for edm drilling,though lot of manufactures claimed that can punch 400 mm thickness on the materials,but few can.In future,Whether the processing the large thickness metal will be a important technical index.
